Welcome to a wonderful year in 6th grade! My name is Mrs. Kimberly Garza and I will be your child's 6th Grade Math teacher
. This is my thirteenth year teaching, and fourth year at this school. I am so excited to have the opportunity to serve the children of Sallie Humble Elementary. My personal goal this year is to make learning both fun and enjoyable for my students, while providing many opportunities for hands-on experience and "real world" application of skills. I am looking forward to meeting each of you and working closely to provide the best education possible for your child!

Please feel free to contact me either by
e-mail, Remind App, written note, or by phone.

    Things to remember:
    1. We are working on a 9 weeks reporting system. So, you will only see 4 report cards coming home this year! You will get a progress report every 3 weeks in between report cards. Please speak with your child about the importance of trying to do their best work at all times.

    2. We send home signed papers every Wednesday in their Tiger Folders. Please take the time to go over every test with your child. Discuss the mistakes that were made, and talk about how not to make the same mistakes again. Encourage them to excel!

    3. Your child has 9 weeks to meet their Accelerated Reader goal. They must score a minimum average of 90% on quizzes and meet their individual points goal each 9 weeks. They must check out, read, and test on books which are on their reading level. Students should be reading every night. Please take the time to read with them and ask them questions about their books as often as possible.

    4. All students at Sallie Humble were given planners at the beginning of the year which should stay inside of their binders and come home with them each afternoon.  Please check inside them nightly for homework assignments. Teachers also provide homework and class notes weekly, so make sure you go over these as often as possible throughout the week. We want your child to be successful!

    5. Encourage your child to practice daily to master their basic math facts. We use the Math Facts in a Flash program at school to help students improve fluency. We also use the Accelerated Math 2.0 program to enhance our instruction. Students need to practice daily and attempt to master as many objectives as possible. Rennaissance Home Connect is a great place to see your child's progress with Accelerated Math 2.0, Math Facts in a Flash, and Accelerated Reader.

    6. We use the Eureka Math curriculum in 6th grade. Students do not have a textbook, but rather have Lesson Modules run on paper. We work through each lesson in class. The students do Problem Sets at home to practice the skill they learned that day in class. They should bring their classwork sheets and speckled notebook with Math Vocabulary terms and examples home to help them complete their homework and to study. There are many available resources online to help parents understand each lesson as it is taught at school by the teacher. Check out EMBARC.online  6th Grade Math to see videos and helpful explanations for each lesson in the 6 modules we will cover this year. You will also see Parent Newsletters created for each Module Topic which teach you how to do the math the way your child is learning it.

    7. Sign up for my class on the Remind App. I will be sending out important information about your child's math class through this notification program. You can create an account and access it online on your desktop computer at Remind.com, on your smartphone's web browser, via the app, or by text messages. It is a free service, and is probably the fastest way to communicate with me. You can send me messages and questions via the Remind App. If you want to be up to date on all the most current events of my Math class then I highly recommend that you join my class today.
